Falkville Metal Man — Police chief Jeff Greenhaw of Falkville, Alabama photographed a silver-suited entity on a rural road. The four photographs remain among the most-discussed humanoid encounter images.
On October 17, 1973, the chief of police of Falkville, Alabama, photographed what he claimed was a man-shaped figure dressed in shiny metallic-looking material walking along a rural road outside town. The four resulting Polaroid images, taken in rapid succession, are among the most unusual police-source UFO photographs on record.
【Background】
Jeff Greenhaw, then 26 and recently elected police chief of the small north Alabama town, received a phone call around 10 p.m. from a woman reporting a craft landing in a field on the outskirts of Falkville. Greenhaw drove out alone, taking a Polaroid camera he kept in the patrol car.
【The Encounter】
On a dirt road off Highway 24, Greenhaw said his headlights illuminated a humanoid figure standing in the road, with what appeared to be an aluminum-foil-like suit and a small antenna on the head. He stopped, exited the car, and took four photographs in succession. He then attempted to call out to the figure, which began to run away. Greenhaw gave chase in the patrol car, but the figure outran the vehicle along the dirt road at what Greenhaw described as exceptional speed.
【Investigation】
The case attracted national attention. Greenhaw underwent a polygraph, which he passed. However, within weeks of the encounter his trailer home burned down under unexplained circumstances, his wife left him, and the town council pressured him to resign. Skeptical investigators including Philip Klass proposed that the "Metal Man" was a prank by a person in a heat-resistant aluminized fire suit. Greenhaw maintained the account until his death in 2023.
【Modern Assessment】
The Falkville case is unusual in combining contemporaneous photographic evidence, a credible primary witness in a public-trust role, and a striking aftermath of personal ruin that Greenhaw himself attributed to the incident. It is now generally categorised as either an elaborate local hoax or an unexplained encounter, depending on which witness chronology is considered authoritative.
