Levelland UFO case — Within hours, fifteen drivers near Levelland, Texas reported a glowing egg-shaped object that caused their car engines and headlights to fail. The Air Force dismissed it as ball lightning.
On the night of November 2, 1957, motorists across a 20-kilometre area around the small town of Levelland in west Texas independently reported a glowing, egg-shaped object hovering above the highway, accompanied by the simultaneous failure of their car engines and headlights. The case is one of the strongest early American examples of UFO electromagnetic effects on vehicles. 【Background】 Levelland (population around 10,000 at the time) sits on the flat Texas Panhandle west of Lubbock. The night of November 2 was clear with patchy ground fog. Sheriff Weir Clem received the first call from a frightened farmhand named Pedro Saucedo around 11 p.m. 【The Encounter】 Saucedo reported that a torpedo-shaped object about 200 feet long had passed low over his pickup on Route 116, stalling his engine and dimming his headlights, with audible vibration and heat. Within the next two hours, the sheriff's office logged at least seven independent calls from other drivers across the area — west of Levelland, on Route 51, north on the Whiteface road — each describing a glowing object hovering above the road and simultaneous engine and headlight failure. In each case, the vehicle restarted easily after the object departed. 【Investigation】 Sheriff Clem and a deputy responded to one call themselves and reported observing the object at distance. The case was investigated by the US Air Force Project Blue Book within days. Blue Book's conclusion attributed the sightings to "ball lightning" and ruled out atmospheric optical illusion. Dr. James E. McDonald, an atmospheric physicist at the University of Arizona, subsequently re-investigated the case and found the ball-lightning hypothesis inconsistent with the multi-witness geometry and duration. 【Modern Assessment】 Levelland is now regarded as one of the canonical "vehicle electromagnetic interference" cases. It is referenced in academic literature on UAP and physical-trace phenomena, including the Sturrock Panel review. The Project Blue Book official explanation is widely considered inadequate by both UFO researchers and several mainstream meteorologists. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levelland_UFO_case
