Chilean Navy UAP video — A Chilean Navy helicopter recorded nine minutes of infrared video showing a fast-moving object releasing material over the Pacific. Chile's CEFAA released the footage publicly in 2017.
On November 11, 2014, a Chilean Navy Airbus AS-355 helicopter on a coastal patrol mission off the central coast of Chile recorded nine minutes and twelve seconds of infrared video of a fast-moving aerial object that the crew could not identify. The footage became one of the most-studied modern UAP cases after Chile's official UAP investigation agency, CEFAA, publicly released it in 2017.
【Background】
The helicopter, operating north of the Quintero naval base, was conducting a routine inspection flight. Both the pilot and a technician aboard had been tracking the object visually for several minutes before activating the WESCAM MX-15 HD infrared sensor. The object was flying at the same altitude as the helicopter (around 4,500 feet) and moving on a parallel course at roughly the same speed.
【The Encounter】
At two points during the recording, the object ejected a hot plume of material that dispersed behind it. Air traffic control in Santiago confirmed no other aircraft were operating in that airspace. Both the helicopter's radar and Santiago Centro radar failed to register the object. After nine minutes, the object accelerated and disappeared into a cloud bank.
【Investigation】
CEFAA, supported by the Chilean Air Force, conducted a two-year multidisciplinary analysis with physicists, aeronautical engineers, astronomers, and meteorologists. Initial hypotheses (medium-haul jet, plane on approach, weather balloon, drone) were each ruled out by speed, altitude, behavior, or thermal signature. The committee unanimously concluded the object was "a UAP" — an Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon.
【Modern Assessment】
The case is frequently cited alongside the US Nimitz and Gimbal footage as evidence that mainstream military aviation now treats UAP as a legitimate observational category. CEFAA's transparent peer-review approach — making the raw footage and analysis publicly available — set a precedent that influenced the 2021 ODNI UAP report in the United States.
