Hudson Valley UFO sightings — Over 5000 reports from the Hudson Valley region of New York and Connecticut described a massive boomerang-shaped craft with colored lights moving silently between 1982 and 1986.
Between 1982 and 1986, more than 5,000 people across the Hudson Valley region of New York and Connecticut — including towns such as Brewster, Yorktown, and Kent — reported sightings of an enormous, silent, boomerang or V-shaped craft with arrangements of brilliantly colored lights. The Hudson Valley wave is one of the largest sustained mass-sighting events ever documented in North America.
【Background】
The first widely reported encounters occurred along the Taconic State Parkway in northern Westchester County. Reports peaked on the night of July 24, 1984 (often dated 1983 in earlier accounts), when hundreds of motorists pulled over to watch the craft cross the parkway. Subsequent reports continued for several years and spanned dozens of municipalities on both sides of the New York–Connecticut border.
【The Encounter】
Witnesses described the object as immense — sometimes estimated at the size of three football fields — with red, green, blue, and white lights moving slowly and without sound. Police, pilots, scientists, and engineers were among those who reported clear views. In many accounts the lights would suddenly rearrange or the entire formation would change direction.
【Investigation】
Investigators Philip Imbrogno and the late J. Allen Hynek collaborated on the most detailed research, eventually publishing "Night Siege: The Hudson Valley UFO Sightings" (1987). Air traffic control radar at Stewart International Airport reportedly tracked unidentified returns on several occasions. The Federal Aviation Administration acknowledged receiving reports but did not formally investigate.
【Modern Assessment】
A common explanation involves a group of pilots flying ultralight aircraft in close formation as a hoax — an idea documented by skeptics including Philip Klass. Witnesses and investigators have countered that the size, behavior, and altitude of the formations were inconsistent with ultralights. The Hudson Valley case remains a paradigmatic example of how a single regional UFO wave can persist for years with high credibility witnesses.
