Rendlesham Forest incident — USAF personnel at RAF Bentwaters in Suffolk investigated a glowing triangular craft in Rendlesham Forest over three nights. Deputy base commander Lt Col Charles Halt's official memo and audio recording survive.
Between December 26 and 28, 1980, USAF personnel stationed at RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge in Suffolk reported a series of encounters with a glowing triangular craft in nearby Rendlesham Forest. The case is often called "Britain's Roswell". [First Night Encounter] In the early hours of December 26, security patrols saw bright lights descend into the forest. Three airmen — John Burroughs, Jim Penniston, and Edward Cabansag — were dispatched and approached a metallic triangular craft with hieroglyph-like markings. Penniston reportedly touched the craft and recorded a series of binary codes from the encounter before it rose silently and departed. [Second Night and Halt Tape] On December 27, Deputy Base Commander Lt Col Charles Halt led another patrol to investigate. He recorded the events on a hand-held cassette tape (the "Halt tape"), describing flashing red and blue lights, beams of light striking the ground near the base, and indentations in the soil at the original landing site. [The Halt Memo] On January 13, 1981, Halt submitted an official memorandum to the UK Ministry of Defence titled "Unexplained Lights". The document, declassified in 1983, formally records the events and is considered one of the most credible military UFO documents ever released. [Modern Investigations] Subsequent investigations debated whether the lights could be attributed to Orford Ness lighthouse, fragments of a Soviet rocket re-entry, or genuine unknowns. Burroughs and Penniston continued to discuss their experiences publicly, and Burroughs received US veteran disability benefits for injuries linked to the encounter.
