2008 Stephenville sightings — Dozens of residents in Stephenville, Texas reported a silent mile-wide craft with bright lights pursued by military jets. FAA radar later corroborated unidentified tracks toward Crawford.
On the evening of January 8, 2008, dozens of residents of Stephenville, Texas — a town of about 18,000 people roughly 70 miles southwest of Fort Worth — reported a large, silent craft passing over the area at low altitude, pursued shortly afterward by US military fighter jets. The event drew national news coverage and triggered a Freedom of Information Act release of radar data that corroborated the witnesses' accounts. 【Background】 Stephenville lies in rural Erath County, with President George W. Bush's Prairie Chapel Ranch in Crawford about 100 miles to the southeast. Several witnesses, including pilots, a constable, and a former air traffic controller, independently described an object roughly a mile long, hovering or moving slowly with bright lights and no audible engine noise. 【The Encounter】 Witnesses estimated the craft's altitude at no more than 3,000 feet. Multiple observers reported seeing F-16 fighters arrive and chase the object across the sky. The Air Force initially denied any aircraft were in the area on January 8, but later reversed its position and confirmed that ten F-16s from the 457th Fighter Squadron at NAS Fort Worth had been conducting training flights in the W-107A military operations area. 【Investigation】 The Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) obtained FAA radar data via FOIA and commissioned analyst Glen Schulze to study it. The analysis identified an unidentified radar return moving at varying speeds — at one point reportedly 1,900 mph — on a trajectory consistent with witness reports, and approaching the restricted airspace over President Bush's ranch before disappearing. The radar data showed no transponder. 【Modern Assessment】 Skeptics, including the National UFO Reporting Center director, attributed many of the lights to military aircraft and conventional flares from training exercises. However, the corroborating radar tracks and the unusually large size described by experienced witnesses keep Stephenville on most lists of significant 21st-century cases. The Air Force's initial denial, later contradicted by its own records, drew lasting scrutiny. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Stephenville%2C_Texas_UFO_sightings
