Westall UFO — Over 200 students and staff at Westall High School near Melbourne watched a silvery disc descend into a paddock before climbing away rapidly. The case remains Australia's largest mass-witnessed UFO event.
On the morning of April 6, 1966, more than 200 students and staff at Westall High School and the adjoining primary school in suburban Melbourne, Australia, watched a silver disc-shaped object descend into a paddock, hover, and then ascend rapidly toward the north. The case is the largest mass UFO sighting in Australian history and one of the largest school-witnessed UFO events on record. 【Background】 Westall is a southeast suburb of Melbourne with a high school sited next to a large open paddock known locally as "the Grange." Around 11 a.m. local time on a clear autumn day, students were outside for a physical education period. 【The Encounter】 A pupil first spotted the object as a silvery disc above the school. Within minutes, hundreds of students, teachers, the school principal, and several adult observers in the surrounding neighbourhood saw three small objects descend from the sky and a larger central disc settle into the paddock. After a few minutes, the disc lifted, accelerated upward, and was reportedly chased by several light aircraft. A circular area of crushed grass remained at the landing site. 【Investigation】 The Royal Australian Air Force opened an investigation but produced no public conclusion. Many witnesses later described an aggressive school directive to stop discussing the incident. In the 2010s, a long-form documentary "Westall '66: A Suburban UFO Mystery" reunited several witnesses and corroborated the broad outline of the original accounts. A government file was located in the 2010s and partially released to researchers. 【Modern Assessment】 The Westall case is exceptional in the number of witnesses (estimates range from 200 to 400) and in the consistency of their independent accounts decades later. Skeptics have proposed a high-altitude reconnaissance balloon or a Royal Australian Air Force test object, but the suburban landing, the multiple-craft formation, and the suppressed institutional response have kept the case unresolved in the public record.
