Belgian UFO wave — Between November 1989 and April 1990, thousands of Belgians reported large silent triangular craft. The Belgian Air Force scrambled F-16s and released radar gun-camera footage to the public.
Between November 29, 1989 and April 1990, thousands of Belgians reported sightings of large silent triangular craft hovering low over highways, villages, and cities. The "Belgian UFO wave" remains the only case in which a NATO air force publicly released radar gun-camera footage of a UFO chase.
[Opening Night - Eupen]
The wave began on the evening of November 29, 1989, near the city of Eupen. Two police officers reported seeing a massive triangular craft with three bright lights at its corners and a pulsing red light at its center, hovering silently before drifting slowly across the sky. Within hours, dozens of independent reports came in from across eastern Belgium.
[F-16 Intercept]
On the night of March 30-31, 1990, NATO radar at multiple stations tracked an unidentified object over Belgium. Two F-16 Fighting Falcons were scrambled and recorded radar lock-ons. The object reportedly accelerated from 280 to 1100 km/h and changed altitude from 9000 ft to 5000 ft in seconds — far exceeding human pilot tolerance.
[Public Disclosure]
The Belgian Air Force, in an unprecedented move, released the radar data, gun-camera screenshots, and pilot reports to the press in a public briefing led by Major-General Wilfried De Brouwer. The Air Force stated it could not identify the object but rejected mundane explanations.
[Aftermath]
The wave concluded by April 1990 with no firm identification. The famous "Petit-Rechain photograph" of a glowing triangle, taken in April 1990, was later admitted by its photographer to be a hoax in 2011 — though the broader wave's many witness reports and radar data remain unexplained.
