On the evening of March 13, 1997, thousands of witnesses across Arizona, Nevada, and Sonora reported a series of unidentified lights moving in formation across hundreds of miles. It became one of the most-witnessed UFO events in US history. [Two Distinct Events] The night included two separate phenomena. First, a massive triangular formation of lights traversed the state from north to south between 7:30 PM and 10:30 PM. Later, a series of stationary lights appeared over Phoenix and remained for over an hour before fading in sequence. [Witnesses and Documentation] Witnesses included pilots, police officers, military personnel, and Arizona Governor Fife Symington. Hundreds of photographs and home videos were recorded. The massive V-shaped craft, estimated to be a mile wide, reportedly passed overhead silently and blocked out the stars. [Official Explanations] The US Air Force later attributed the second set of stationary lights to A-10 Warthog aircraft dropping flares during a training exercise at the Barry M. Goldwater Range. However, this did not explain the earlier large triangular formation, which remains unexplained. [Governor's Confession] Initially Symington publicly mocked the sightings with a press conference stunt featuring a staffer in an alien costume.
