Varginha UFO incident — Residents of Varginha, Minas Gerais reported the capture of one or two living humanoid creatures by the Brazilian military. The case has been called Brazil's Roswell.
On January 20, 1996, three young women in the city of Varginha in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais reported encountering a strange humanoid creature crouched against a wall in a vacant lot. Their account, combined with subsequent stories of military activity and the alleged capture of one or more living entities, made Varginha — a town of about 130,000 — one of the most-discussed alien incident sites in South America. It is sometimes called "Brazil's Roswell".
【Background】
Earlier that morning, a local farm worker reported seeing a smoking, submarine-shaped craft hovering low over the countryside outside Varginha. Multiple military vehicles were observed moving through the city throughout the day, and the Brazilian Army subsequently acknowledged that a search operation had taken place but denied that anything unusual was recovered.
【The Encounter】
Liliane, Valquíria, and Kátia Xavier described the creature as roughly 1.5 meters tall with a large head, V-shaped feet, three short bumps on its head, and brown, oily skin. A separate police account by Corporal Marco Eli Chereze, who reportedly handled one of the creatures during the recovery operation, said he later fell seriously ill with a mysterious infection. Chereze died several weeks afterward; his cause of death remained disputed.
【Investigation】
Brazilian investigators, including Dr. Ubirajara Franco Rodrigues and journalist Vitorio Pacaccini, conducted extensive interviews with witnesses, hospital staff, and military personnel. Reports surfaced of two creatures being transported — one already dead, one alive — through the Humanitas and Bom Pastor hospitals to the regional military base. The Brazilian military issued formal denials but never released full operational records.
【Modern Assessment】
A 2020 Brazilian Air Force document release confirmed that an internal investigation into the Varginha events had been conducted, although the file did not corroborate the creature accounts. The case continues to generate annual events in Varginha, including a public statue and a UFO-themed water tower. Skeptics propose alternative explanations involving homeless individuals or misidentified animals, but no consensus has emerged.
